Candle Care 101: The Ultimate Candle Care Guide

Candles bring warmth, comfort, and ambiance to any space—but they also require a little care to ensure they burn safely and beautifully. Whether you're a candle connoisseur or just getting started, these essential tips will help you enjoy every flame to the fullest.

Candle Safety First

1. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
If you need to step away, extinguish the flame completely. Make sure there’s no glowing ember or smoldering wick left behind.

2. Keep candles away from flammable items.
Always burn candles in a clutter-free area, away from curtains, paper, or anything that could catch fire.

3. Use a stable, heat-resistant surface.
Place your candle on a flat, level surface that can withstand heat to avoid tipping or damage.

4. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
Accidents happen—make sure your candle is in a safe spot where little hands or curious paws can’t reach.

5. Never move a burning candle.
Wait until the wax has hardened and the container has cooled before touching or relocating your candle.

6. Watch for drafts.
If the flame flickers or dances, it may be in a drafty spot. Extinguish the candle and move it to a more stable environment.

Burn Bright, Burn Right

7. Avoid short burns on the first light.
Let your candle burn long enough to form a full melt pool (usually 2–3 hours). This prevents tunneling and ensures an even burn next time.

8. Store candles properly.
Keep them in a cool, dry, dark place. Heat and light can cause wax to soften and fragrance oils to evaporate.

9. Trim your wick.
Before each burn, trim the wick to ¼ inch. This keeps the flame steady and reduces smoke and soot.

10. Don’t burn for more than 4 hours.
Long burns can overheat the container and affect the candle’s performance.

11. Stop When ½ Inch of Wax Remains
When your candle has about half an inch of wax left, it’s time to say goodbye—but not to the jar! This is the perfect moment to upcycle your container into something new: a mini planter, a pen holder, or a stylish storage jar. Need inspiration? We’ve got plenty of creative ideas to share.

12. Keep the wax pool clean.
Remove any wick trimmings or debris to avoid fire hazards and keep your candle looking its best.

Extinguishing the Right Way

13. Use a snuffer.
Blowing out a candle can cause hot wax to splatter. A snuffer is safer and cleaner.

14. Never use water to extinguish a candle.
Water can cause the hot wax to splatter and may even crack the container.

15. Let it cool.
Candle containers can get hot! Always allow the wax to harden and the jar to cool before touching or relighting.
